E-mail: amary@vm.uff.br The thoracic surgery is a speciality which is rich in challenges, requiring sophisticated and complex care in the postoperative period. All the patients submitted to a thoracotomy are left with some volume of air in the pleural cavity and prone developing a residual pneumothorax. When closing the thorax, the surgeon must restore the negative pressure of the pleural cavity in its simplest possible way. Routinely during surgeries we are faced with the inconvenience of maintaining the thoracic tube and the drainage system in the postoperative period of the veterinary patient. The objective of this study was to verify the re-establishment of the negative pressure cavity and the presence of respiratory acidosis and permissive hypercapnia through analysis of the arterial blood gases and the acquisition of images by videolaparoscopy. In order for the study to be carried out, ten sheep were submitted to thoracostomy so that the thoracic tube could be inserted a clinic condition of open pneumothorax could be simulated. The tube was connected to a chest drainage system with single bottle seal water. An endoscopic of 10mm was inserted in the same hemithorax to obtain the images. The mean blood pressure measuring device was used for blood collection. The gasometric parameters of pH, paO2 , paCO2 , HCO3 and base excess were analised during the immediate pre, trans and post-operative period. The re-establishment of the cavity negative pressure with a chest drainage system in single bottle in the immediate postoperative period was obtained in all the evaluated patients. Two patients presented a condition of hypercapnia however permissive. In conclusion, the use of the chest drainage system with with single bottle seal water in the immediate postoperative period to re-establishment of the negative pressure cavity is satisfactory.
